GATE 2026 EE Q.32: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
The flux of through the closed unit sphere is , because everywhere.
Official answer: 0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)
The surface , the unit sphere, is closed, so the Gauss divergence theorem applies: , where is the unit ball . is smooth everywhere, so the theorem holds without exceptions.
Take the divergence one term at a time. , because does not depend on .
, because does not depend on .
, because is a constant.
So at every point, and
Check it directly. On the unit sphere the outward unit normal is , so . The sphere is symmetric under , and . The term is odd in , is odd in and is odd in , so each term integrates to zero over the sphere. Physically, the constant field flows in through the lower hemisphere and out through the upper hemisphere in equal amounts. The flux is .
KEY IDEA
For a closed surface, use the divergence theorem to turn the surface integral into . Each component here depends only on the other coordinates ( has no , has no , is constant), so the divergence is zero and the flux through any closed surface is zero.
WATCH OUT FOR
Working out the surface integral in spherical coordinates and getting stuck on terms like . Another mistake is to treat or as if it depended on its own coordinate, for example writing , which gives a nonzero divergence. Some students also multiply the constant by the sphere's area () and forget that the flux in through the lower hemisphere cancels the flux out through the upper one.
