Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) Counterfeit. Good and Evil are opposites, and the opposite of genuine is counterfeit.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Work out how the first pair is related. Good and Evil are opposites, so this is an antonym analogy.

  2. The second pair must have the same relation, so we want the opposite of Genuine (real, authentic, not fake).

  3. (A) Counterfeit means a fake made to pass as the real thing. That is the exact opposite of genuine.

  4. (B) Contraband means goods that are illegal to import or export (smuggled goods). The word says the goods are illegal, not that they are fake, so it is not the opposite of genuine.

  5. (C) Counterfoil is the part of a cheque, ticket or receipt that you keep as a record. Its meaning has nothing to do with being genuine or not.

  6. (D) Counterpart is a person or thing that matches or corresponds to another. That means an equivalent, not an opposite.

  7. Only Counterfeit keeps the antonym relation: Good : Evil :: Genuine : Counterfeit. The answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

Name the relation in the first pair before you look at the options. Here Good and Evil are antonyms, so you need the antonym of Genuine, and that is Counterfeit (a fake made to pass as real).

WATCH OUT FOR

Three of the four options start with "Counter-", and that prefix can suggest "against" or "opposite". Choosing Counterpart or Counterfoil because of the prefix is the trap. Only Counterfeit actually means fake. Contraband also sounds wrong-doing and can tempt, but it means illegal goods, not false goods.
