ANSWER
(D) R and S can be coded as and , respectively.
Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)
The codes for P and Q have two symbols each, and every option also uses two-symbol codes. So we work with two-symbol strings made from and .
By the multiplication principle there are 2 choices for each of the 2 positions, so such codes: . That is exactly one code for each of the four letters.
"Uniquely coded" means no two letters can share a code. P already has and Q already has , so only and are left for R and S.
Check each option. (A) gives S the code , which Q already has. (B) gives S the code , which P already has. (C) gives R the code , which Q already has. All three break uniqueness, so they are rejected.
(D) gives R and S . Neither code is used by P or Q, and the two are different from each other, so all four letters get different codes. The answer is (D).
KEY IDEA
Unique coding means one code per letter with no repeats. Two symbols over two positions give only codes. Once P takes and Q takes , R and S must share out the two codes that are left, and .
WATCH OUT FOR
Checking only that R and S get different codes from each other, and forgetting to check them against P and Q. Option (A) looks fine on that test because , but it gives S the code , which Q already has.
