Answer and solution

ANSWER

(C) Recommend. Protesting is how you actively express disagreement, and recommending is how you actively express agreement or approval.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Find the relation in the first pair. To protest is to say openly and actively that you disagree. The first word is an attitude, and the second is the outward action that expresses it (a stronger, public form of the same attitude).

  2. Turn the relation into a test sentence. "When you disagree with something, you protest against it." The second pair has to fit the same frame with the opposite attitude: "When you agree with something, you ______ it." So we need an outward action that expresses agreement or approval.

  3. (A) Refuse means to decline or say no. It expresses rejection, so it belongs with disagree, not with agree. Reject.

  4. (B) Pretext is a noun meaning a false reason given to hide the real one. It is not an action that expresses any attitude. Reject.

  5. (D) Refute means to prove that a statement or claim is wrong. It also expresses disagreement. Reject.

  6. (C) Recommend means to speak in favour of something or endorse it publicly. That is an outward action expressing approval, which is agreement. It stands to agree in the same way that protest stands to disagree: both are active, outward expressions of the attitude in the first word.

  7. Hence Disagree : Protest : : Agree : Recommend. The answer is (C).

KEY IDEA

Put the first pair into a sentence ("When you disagree, you protest"), then keep the relation and swap the attitude ("When you agree, you ______"). Protest is the outward, active expression of disagreement, so the answer has to be the outward, active expression of agreement: recommend (to endorse or speak in favour of something).

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing Refuse or Refute because they feel close to "Protest". This matches the answer to the second word of the first pair when it should match the relation. Both words express disagreement, so they have the wrong polarity for "Agree". Pretext is a noun that has nothing to do with either attitude.
