Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) . A body diagonal of a cube is a 3-fold rotation axis, so the smallest turn about it that leaves the cube looking the same is .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. A body diagonal joins two opposite vertices, say (top) and (bottom). Stand the cube on so that is vertical. With coordinates, take and , so the axis is the line through .

  2. Height along the axis is proportional to . The three neighbours of , , and , all have , so they sit at height of the diagonal (the upper level). The three neighbours of , , and , have , so they sit at height (the lower level). No other vertex is at either height.

  3. Seen from above, each level is an equilateral triangle, so its three vertices are apart around the axis. The lower triangle points the opposite way to the upper one: the two are offset by , and together they make the familiar zig-zag ring of 6 vertices.

  4. Turning about the vertical axis never changes a point's height. So if the cube is to look exactly the same, the three upper-level vertices (the only vertices at height ) must land on one another. Because they are apart, the angle of rotation must be a multiple of .

  5. works. The rotation by about this diagonal is the cyclic swap . It sends every corner of the cube to another corner, for example , so the cube lands exactly on itself and the view does not change.

  6. fails. It turns an upper-level vertex to the direction of a lower-level vertex while keeping it at height , and there is no corner there. fails for the same reason. fails because it is not a multiple of : the three edges at , which are apart, would not land on one another.

  7. So the body diagonal is a 3-fold symmetry axis of the cube, and the smallest rotation that leaves the view unchanged is . Answer: (A).

KEY IDEA

Three edges meet at each end of a body diagonal, and the six remaining corners form two equilateral triangles at heights and of the diagonal. A turn about a vertical axis cannot change a corner's height, so each triangle has to land on itself. That means the angle must be a multiple of , and itself works: it is the cyclic swap .

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing because the six middle corners look like a regular hexagon from above. They are not all at the same height: alternate corners sit at and of the diagonal, so a turn puts a corner where the cube has none. Choosing mixes up this axis with the face-centre axis, which is 4-fold.
