Fabry disease in humans is a X-linked disease. The probability (in percentage) for a phenotypically normal father and a carrier mother to have a son with Fabry disease is ____________.

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The probability of a phenotypically normal father and carrier mother having a son with Fabry disease is 25%.

Official answer: 25Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 BT (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Fabry disease is X-linked recessive. Let = normal (dominant) allele and = Fabry-disease (recessive) allele on the X chromosome.

  2. A phenotypically normal father has only one X chromosome and is unaffected, so his genotype must be .

  3. A carrier mother is heterozygous — unaffected herself but carrying one copy of the disease allele — so her genotype is .

  4. Cross : the father passes or (each with probability ), and the mother passes or (each with probability ), giving four equally likely offspring: (normal daughter), (carrier daughter), (normal son), (affected son).

  5. Exactly one of these four equally likely outcomes — — is a son affected with Fabry disease.

  6. Probability of an affected son .

KEY IDEA

Fabry disease is X-linked recessive. A normal father () crossed with a carrier mother () produces four equally likely offspring classes; only one of the four (, an affected son) has the disease, giving a probability of among all offspring.

WATCH OUT FOR

Confusing "probability among all offspring" (1/4) with "probability among sons only" (1/2); the question asks for the former.
