Select all choices that are subspaces of .
Note: denotes the set of real numbers.
ANSWER
The subspaces of are (A) and (C).
Official answer: A, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 DA (IISc Bengaluru)
A subset is a subspace if it contains and is closed under addition and under scalar multiplication. Test each option.
(A) The set is , because range over all of . A span of vectors is always a subspace, so (A) is a subspace (it is the plane ).
(B) Here , , , so every vector in the set has , and . Take (with ), which is in the set. Then has , so it is not in the set. Closure under scalar multiplication fails, so (B) is not a subspace. The squares allow only non-negative multipliers, giving a cone rather than a subspace.
(C) The set is the solution set of the homogeneous system with , that is, the null space of . If and , then , so a null space is always a subspace. Hence (C) is a subspace (here a line: the two rows are independent, so the rank is 2 and the nullity is ).
(D) Put : . The zero vector is not in the set, so (D) is not a subspace. It is a plane that does not pass through the origin.
Hence the subspaces are (A) and (C).
KEY IDEA
A subspace must contain the zero vector and be closed under addition and all real scalar multiples. A span of vectors and the solution set of a homogeneous linear system are always subspaces.
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating (B) as a span because it is built from two vectors. The squared coefficients can only be non-negative, so negative multiples are missing. For (D), the mistake is forgetting that a plane misses the origin.
