Consider a set . Let be another set which is a subspace of with dimension two.
Which of the following gives the area of ?
ANSWER
The area of is , option (A).
Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 DA (IIT Guwahati)
Write . The condition describes the solid ball in of radius centred at the origin.
is a subspace of of dimension two, so it is a plane. Every subspace contains the zero vector, so this plane passes through the origin, which is the centre of the ball.
Take any point of the plane. It lies in exactly when . Inside the plane, with an orthonormal basis of and , we have . So , a full disc of radius . This holds for every two-dimensional subspace, so the answer does not depend on which is chosen.
Area of the disc: This is option (A).
KEY IDEA
A two-dimensional subspace of is a plane through the origin. The origin is the centre of the ball , so every such plane cuts the ball in a disc of the full radius, .
WATCH OUT FOR
Treating as a general plane that might miss the centre, and concluding the area depends on . A subspace must contain the origin, so the cross-section is always the largest disc. Another slip is taking the radius as instead of , which gives . A third is confusing the disc area with the surface area or volume of the ball.
