Figure description

A four-arm bridge drawn as a diamond with a top node, a bottom node, a left node and a right node. An AC source labelled √ 2 cos (1000 t) V is on the left, connected by wires to the top node and the bottom node. Top-left arm (top node to left node): variable resistor R_1 in parallel with variable capacitor C_1. Top-right arm (top node to right node): resistor R_2. Bottom-left arm (left node to bottom node): resistor R_4. Bottom-right arm (bottom node to right node): the coil, drawn inside a dotted outline labelled 'Coil', made of inductance L_x in series with resistance R_x. Detector D is connected between the left node and the right node. No values are given for R_2, R_4, R_x or L_x.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The Q factor of the coil is 10.

Official answer: 10Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Identify the arms. The source feeds the top and bottom nodes, and D sits between the left and right nodes. The opposite pairs are therefore (, coil) and (, ).

  2. Balance condition (D reads zero): the products of opposite-arm impedances are equal, , where and .

  3. Solve for the coil impedance:

  4. Equate real parts: . Equate imaginary parts: , so .

  5. Q factor of the coil: and cancel, which is why the question does not give their values.

  6. The source gives . This is the angular frequency, not .

KEY IDEA

At balance in a Maxwell-Wien (inductance-capacitance) bridge, the coil's ratio equals of the parallel RC arm opposite it. So depends only on , and , and the ratio arms , cancel.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using , which gives . The source is written as , so is already in rad/s. A second mistake is to treat and as a series combination instead of a parallel one, which gives .
