Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

The input node V_sense connects by one wire directly to terminal 1 of the switch S_W, and by a branch to the input of an inverting amplifier labelled 'Amplifier' with gain -1. The amplifier output goes to terminal 0 of S_W. S_W is drawn inside a dashed box: terminal 1 at the top, terminal 0 below it, and the switch's common (pole) terminal on the right, connected to the output node V_out. V_out drives a voltmeter circle marked 'V/M', labelled 'PMMC voltmeter', whose other end is grounded. A separate input V_ref goes to the non-inverting (+) input of a comparator labelled 'Comparator'. The comparator's inverting (-) input is grounded. The comparator output V_C goes to the switch's control input, drawn as an arrow pointing up into the bottom of the dashed S_W box.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The PMMC voltmeter reads 0 V. The switch-and-inverter pair multiplies V_sense by a ±1 square wave at 1 kHz, and a 2 kHz signal multiplied by that square wave has no DC component.

  1. Comparator with its input grounded: is HIGH when and LOW when . has frequency , so its period is . For , is HIGH and is at 1. For , is LOW and is at 0.

  2. Switch output: position 1 passes and position 0 passes (through the gain amplifier). So , where is a square wave at . The circuit is a phase-sensitive (synchronous) detector.

  3. PMMC with bandwidth: the meter responds only to the DC (average) value of . Every AC component of is at or above, far outside its bandwidth.

  4. Average over one reference period:

  5. Across each half-period (), the argument advances by . at therefore completes exactly one full cycle in each half, so each integral is and .

  6. Fourier check: the square wave has no DC term and only odd harmonics (). Multiplying by a sine gives components at . These are all odd multiples of and are never , so has no DC term.

  7. The voltmeter reading is .

KEY IDEA

The comparator, the gain amplifier and the switch together multiply by a square wave locked to . This is a phase-sensitive detector. A PMMC meter with a bandwidth reads only the DC part of the product. That DC part is non-zero only when has a component at the reference frequency or at one of its odd harmonics. Here is an even harmonic of , so the reading is .

WATCH OUT FOR

One error is to treat the circuit as a full-wave rectifier, taking and reading . The switch follows , not , so the two signals are at different frequencies and the product is not rectified. Another error is to read an rms value, . A PMMC meter responds to the average value, not the rms value.
