Figure from the GATE 2020 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single-loop series circuit. Left side: an AC voltage source (circle with a sine symbol, no polarity marks) labelled √ 2 100 cos (1000t) volts. The top wire runs from the source's top terminal through a 100 Ω resistor to the top-right corner. The right side, going down, has a 100 mH inductor and then a 10 capacitor in series. The bottom wire returns from the capacitor to the source's bottom terminal and carries the current I, marked with an arrow pointing left (from the capacitor side toward the source).

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The rms value of the phasor current is .

Official answer: 1Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 IN (IIT Delhi)

  1. Source phasor: has a peak of , so its rms phasor is (rms), with .

  2. Inductive reactance: .

  3. Capacitive reactance: .

  4. Series impedance: . Because , the circuit is at series resonance: , which is the source frequency.

  5. Ohm's law in phasor form: (rms). The arrow's direction can only flip the sign, which shifts the phase by . It cannot change the magnitude.

  6. rms value of : .

KEY IDEA

At the series and have equal reactances ( each), so the circuit is at series resonance. The two reactances cancel, only the resistor limits the current, and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the peak voltage in place of the rms value gives , which is the peak current, not the rms current asked for. A second slip is adding the reactances () when they should be subtracted. That gives and a current that is far too small.
