Figure description

Single-loop-pair circuit with a common bottom (reference) wire. Left branch: an ideal 10 V voltage source, + terminal at the top, - terminal at the bottom wire. From the top of the voltage source, a resistor of α Ω runs horizontally to a top middle node (call it A). A 1 Ω resistor connects node A vertically down to the bottom wire. From node A, a 2 Ω resistor runs horizontally to the top right node. Right branch: an ideal 10 A current source between the bottom wire and the top right node, arrow pointing upward (current delivered from the bottom wire into the top right node, i.e. towards the 2 Ω resistor and node A). The bottom wire joins the bottoms of the voltage source, the 1 Ω resistor and the current source.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The source delivers for every value of . The resistor carries the full and so sits at exactly , which leaves no current through or the source. Option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Take the bottom wire as the reference node. The resistor is in series with the ideal current source, so it carries exactly into node A. A resistor in series with an ideal current source does not change that current.

  2. Write KCL at node A, with node voltage and currents entering equal to currents leaving:

  3. Multiply through by : This holds for every .

  4. The current through the resistor is also the current through the source:

  5. Check: all from the current source flows down the resistor, so the voltage across it is . That equals the source voltage, so there is no voltage across to drive a current. The same holds in the limit : the source then fixes directly, the resistor draws , the current source supplies all of it, and the voltage source again carries nothing.

  6. Power delivered by the voltage source: , whatever the value of . Answer (A).

KEY IDEA

The ideal current source sets the current in its own branch, and the resistor in series with it has no effect on that current. If the voltage source carried no current, the whole would pass through the resistor and put exactly on node A. That matches the source voltage, so KCL is satisfied with zero current in for any value of . Because the voltage source carries no current, its power is zero.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (D) on the grounds that α is unknown, without checking whether it cancels. It does: . A second mistake is to add the resistor into the node equation as with an unknown , or to charge the current source's to the voltage source and get , option (C). The current source's current goes entirely into node A and then down the resistor.
