Figure from the GATE 2018 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two-mesh circuit with a common bottom (reference) wire. Left branch: independent voltage source V_1 (circle, no polarity marks shown) connected from the bottom wire up to the top-left corner, then a 3 Ω resistor along the top wire to a central top node (call it A). Right branch: from node A a 2 Ω resistor along the top wire to the top-right corner, then down through independent voltage source V_2 (circle, no polarity marks shown) to the bottom wire. Middle branch: a 6 Ω resistor from node A straight down to the bottom wire (a dot marks the junction on the bottom wire). Current reference directions, all drawn at node A: I_1 on the top wire pointing left (from A toward the 3 Ω resistor), I_2 on the top wire pointing right (from A toward the 2 Ω resistor), I_3 pointing downward from A into the 6 Ω resistor. So all three currents are defined as leaving node A.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 0.95 to 1.05Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. All three reference arrows point away from the top node A, so KCL at A gives . Take the bottom wire as the reference, so is the voltage of node A. The source polarities are not needed, because the current given for each sub-circuit fixes that sub-circuit on its own.

  2. Only acting ( shorted): the resistor now runs from A to the reference through the short, so .

  3. Then . As a check, KCL gives .

  4. Only acting ( shorted): the resistor now runs from A to the reference through the short, so .

  5. Then . As a check, .

  6. Superposition: This agrees with , which gives .

KEY IDEA

When one source is set to zero, the resistor in that source's branch ends up connected between node A and the reference. The one branch current you are given then fixes the node voltage (, ). The current in each sub-circuit is , and superposition adds the two. You never need the source values or their polarities.

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to read each given current as a current flowing into node A. All three reference arrows point away from A, so makes , not . Another is to try to find and first when their polarities are not shown. A third is to add the given currents and directly instead of first working out each sub-circuit's own .
