GATE 2025 · INQ.44 · 2 marks · MCQ

Power consumed by a three-phase balanced load is measured using two-wattmeter method. The per-phase average power drawn by the load is 30 kW at lagging power factor. The readings of the wattmeters will be

  1. (A)

    15 kW and 15 kW

  2. (B)

    22.5 kW and 7.5 kW

  3. (C)

    60 kW and 30 kW

  4. (D)

    45 kW and 45 kW

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The two wattmeters read 60 kW and 30 kW, option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 IN (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Total power. The load is balanced and the 30 kW is per phase, so the total three-phase power is .

  2. Power-factor angle. lagging, so and .

  3. Line volt-ampere product. For a balanced three-phase load, , so

  4. Two-wattmeter readings (balanced load, lagging pf): and .

  5. Substitute :

  6. Check: , and , which gives as required. The readings are 60 kW and 30 kW, option (C).

KEY IDEA

In the two-wattmeter method on a balanced load, the readings add up to the total three-phase power, and they are . At a power factor of , one meter reads the full and the other reads half of it. The two readings are then in a 2 : 1 ratio and add up to the per-phase power.

WATCH OUT FOR

Taking the 30 kW as the total power instead of the per-phase power. That gives readings of 20 kW and 10 kW, which is not an option, or pushes you towards (A) or (B), whose readings also add up to only 30 kW. A second mistake is splitting the total power equally, as in (D). That is only true at unity power factor. At 30 degrees lagging the two meters read differently.
