Figure from the GATE 2018 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single series loop drawn as a rectangle. Top side, left to right: a 1 V battery (negative terminal marked '-' on the left, positive terminal '+' on the right), then a switch drawn in the open position (no closing-time label is printed), then a 1 Ω resistor. Right side: a 1 H inductor running from the top-right corner to the bottom-right corner. Bottom side: a plain wire. Left side: a 1 Ω resistor running from the bottom-left corner up to the top-left corner, where it meets the battery's negative terminal. Everything is in one series loop: battery, switch, 1 Ω, 1 H, then 1 Ω back to the battery.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The loop current 0.5 s after the switch closes is .

Official answer: 0.284 to 0.348Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Take as the instant the switch closes. Before that the loop is open, so no current flows and . An inductor's current cannot change instantly, so .

  2. Once the switch closes, the circuit is a single series RL loop. Total resistance , source , .

  3. Final value: in DC steady state the inductor behaves as a short circuit, so .

  4. Time constant: .

  5. First-order response: , which gives for .

  6. At , exactly one time constant:

  7. Correct to three decimal places, the loop current is .

KEY IDEA

A switched series RL loop with a DC source is a first-order circuit. The current starts at zero, because an inductor's current cannot jump. It rises towards with time constant , and both resistors count because the whole loop is in series. Here 0.5 s is exactly one time constant, so the current has reached of its final value.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using only one of the 1 Ω resistors. Because the second resistor sits on the far side of the loop, it is easy to miss that it is in series too. With you get and , which is outside the key. A second slip is to use or instead of , or to report the final value as if the transient had already died away.
