GATE 2024 EC question 51: Two NMOS transistors.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two NMOS transistors. Left branch: a current source I_ref (arrow pointing down) from V_DD feeds the drain of NMOS M_1; the source of M_1 is grounded. The drain of M_1 is tied by a wire to the gate of M_1 (diode-connected), and this same drain/gate node connects to the top of resistor R_B. The bottom of R_B goes to the gate of NMOS M_2. Input: an AC source v_in (bottom terminal grounded) in series with resistor R_S and capacitor C_1, the far side of C_1 connected to the gate of M_2 (same node as the bottom of R_B). Right branch: M_2 source grounded, drain connected through R_D to V_DD; the output v_out is taken at the drain of M_2.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The answer is (B):

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Small-signal model: is an AC ground. The ideal DC current source has infinite small-signal resistance, so it becomes an open circuit. is a short, as the question says. Body effect, channel-length modulation () and device capacitances are neglected, as stated.

  2. Diode-connected (gate tied to drain, source grounded): here , so the current into its drain is . The resistance looking into its drain is therefore to ground. With open, nothing else loads this node except .

  3. So the gate of has a path to ground through in series with , a total resistance of .

  4. The MOSFET gate draws no current, so and form a plain voltage divider. The figure labels the resistor and the options write it ; it is the same resistor. Because the source of is grounded, :

  5. is a common-source stage with a grounded source and neglected, so its drain sees only to AC ground: .

  6. Putting these together: This is option (B).

KEY IDEA

A diode-connected MOSFET looks like a resistance of to ground, and an ideal bias current source is an open circuit in AC. So the bias network forms a voltage divider with at the gate of , and that reduced input feeds a common-source stage with gain .

WATCH OUT FOR

Choosing (A) because "the gate draws no current, so the whole of reaches the gate". The gate draws nothing, but the bias path does carry AC current, so there is a divider loss across . A second mistake is choosing (D), which drops from the path to ground. A third is treating the diode-connected as an AC ground (it is , not zero), or treating as a short, which grounds the top of and gives an answer that is not among the options.
