Figure from the GATE 2025 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

NMOS differential pair. Supply rail V_DD = 5 V at the top. Two 1 kΩ drain resistors hang from V_DD: the left one to the drain of M1, the right one to the drain of M2. The drain node of M1 is brought out as output V3 (terminal on the left); the drain node of M2 is brought out as output V4 (terminal on the right). M1 (n-channel enhancement MOSFET, arrow on the source) has its gate driven by input V1 from the left; M2 (identical n-channel MOSFET) has its gate driven by input V2 from the right. The sources of M1 and M2 are tied together at a common node, which connects to an ideal DC current source of 2 mA pointing downward (current flowing from the common source node to ground), whose lower terminal is grounded.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

V, option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Assumptions. Both MOSFETs are ideal and in saturation (, so channel-length modulation is neglected). The 2 mA tail source is ideal, the devices are matched with , and both gates sit at the same DC level of .

  2. DC bias (symmetry). The gate voltages are equal and the devices are matched, so the tail current splits equally: .

  3. DC output (KVL through the drain resistor). .

  4. Split the input signals. The differential part is and the common-mode part is . The signal input is purely differential.

  5. Common source node is an AC ground. With a purely differential input the common source node does not move (half-circuit concept), so and . This is small enough for the small-signal model: the overdrive voltage is , and .

  6. Small-signal drain current (). , flowing down into the drain of M.

  7. AC output (inverting at the drain). A rise in increases the drop across the 1 kΩ drain resistor, so the drain voltage falls: . The single-ended gain is , which gives the same result.

  8. Superpose DC and AC. This is option (D).

KEY IDEA

In a symmetric differential pair driven by a purely differential signal, the tail current splits equally at DC and the common source node acts as an AC ground. Each drain therefore behaves like a common-source stage driven by half the differential input. At drain 1 the output is at DC, plus an AC part of .

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to use the full differential input rather than at each gate, which gives (options B, C). Another is to drop the inversion at the drain of M: rising makes fall. A third is to put the whole 2 mA tail current through one resistor, which gives a DC level of 3 V instead of 4 V.
