GATE 2019 BT Q.55: solution and answer

GATE 2019 · BTQ.55 · 2 marks · NAT

The dimensions and operating condition of a lab-scale fermentor are as follows:
Volume = 1 L
Diameter = 20 cm
Agitator speed = 600 rpm
Ratio of impeller diameter to fermentor diameter = 0.3
This fermentor needs to be scaled up to 8,000 L for a large scale industrial application. If the scale-up is based on constant impeller tip speed, the speed of the agitator in the larger reactor is _________ rpm. Assume that the scale-up factor is the cube root of the ratio of fermentor volumes.

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

If the tip speed is kept constant, the agitator in the 8,000 L fermentor runs at 30 rpm.

Official answer: 30Source: Official answer key, GATE 2019 BT (IIT Madras)

  1. Geometric similarity means every length, including the impeller diameter , grows by the same scale factor. The question sets that factor as the cube root of the volume ratio, where and are the lab and large working volumes:

  2. The impeller-to-vessel diameter ratio stays at 0.3 in both vessels, so the impeller diameter also scales by 20. The lab impeller is , so the large one is . Only the ratio of the two affects the answer.

  3. Impeller tip speed: , where is the agitator speed (revolutions per unit time) and is the impeller diameter.

  4. Constant tip speed: , so .

  5. Check: in the lab vessel and in the large one, so the tip speed is the same in both.

KEY IDEA

Tip speed is . Keeping it constant makes inversely proportional to . In a geometrically similar vessel, grows as , so .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slips are scaling the speed by the volume ratio (600/8000) instead of the length ratio (600/20), or using the constant power-per-volume rule (, which gives about 81 rpm) when the question asks for constant tip speed. The 20 cm vessel diameter and the 0.3 impeller ratio are not needed, because both vessels keep the same impeller ratio.
