Figure description

A stirred-tank reactor (vessel with a liquid surface near the top, a central shaft and an impeller at the bottom). A feed stream labelled F_0 enters from the left and joins, at a junction just before the reactor inlet, a recycle line coming from above. The reactor outlet on the right is labelled 'F_0 + F_r' above the line and 'X_1' below it, and goes to a circle labelled 'Cell Separator'. From the top of the separator a recycle line runs up, left across the top of the diagram (labelled 'F_r' and 'X_0') and down to meet the feed line before the reactor. From the right side of the separator the product stream leaves, labelled 'F_0' above and 'X' below.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

.

Official answer: 4.6 to 4.9Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 BT (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Symbols: = feed flow rate, which is also the product flow rate (). = recycle flow rate (). = cell concentration in the reactor (). = cell concentration in the recycle stream. = cell concentration in the product stream. Define the recycle ratio and the concentration factor .

  2. The reactor is well mixed, so the stream leaving it, , carries cells at the reactor concentration . That stream enters the cell separator. Two streams leave the separator: the recycle, at , and the product, at . The flows balance: in, out.

  3. Take a steady-state cell balance on the separator alone. Cells do not grow or die in the separator, so cells in = cells out:

  4. Divide by and substitute :

  5. Substitute the numbers: .

  6. (to one decimal place). As a check, is less than , which is what we expect: the separator sends concentrated cells () back to the reactor, so the product stream leaving it is thinner.

KEY IDEA

All you need is a cell balance around the cell separator. Nothing grows there, so at steady state the cells coming in with the reactor outflow, , must equal the cells leaving in the recycle, , plus those leaving in the product, . No growth kinetics (, , ) are needed. Dividing by gives , with and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Three mistakes come up often. (1) Giving the stream into the separator a flow of instead of . That gives , a negative concentration, which is impossible. (2) Writing the balance over the reactor instead. That brings in growth and needs , which the question does not give. (3) Getting the sign wrong on the recycle term, e.g. . With recycle concentrated at the separator, the product concentration must come out below , not above it.
