Figure from the GATE 2022 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Nyquist plot of G(s). Horizontal axis is Re G(s) and vertical axis is Im G(s), with arrowheads at both ends. A tick on the negative real axis is labelled -1 and sits to the left of the whole plot. (1) One large closed, roughly circular curve. Its leftmost point touches the negative real axis at -0.8, it crosses the positive imaginary axis at the top and the negative imaginary axis at the bottom, and it crosses the positive real axis on the right. It is traversed clockwise: the arrow on the top arc points right and the arrow on the lower-right arc points down and to the left. (2) Inside it, a figure-eight lies along the negative real axis from -0.8 to the origin and crosses itself on the real axis at -0.4. The left lobe, between -0.8 and -0.4, has an arrow on its upper arc pointing right and one on its lower arc pointing left, so it runs clockwise. The right lobe, between -0.4 and 0, has an arrow on its upper arc pointing left and one on its lower arc pointing right, so it runs counter-clockwise. Dimension lines below the axis mark 0.4 from the self-crossing point to the imaginary axis and 0.8 from the leftmost point (-0.8) to the imaginary axis.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

With K = 2 the critical point for the plot of G(s) is -1/K = -0.5. The clockwise outer curve and the clockwise left lobe of the figure-eight each enclose it once, so N = 2. With P = 0, Z = P + N = 2 closed-loop poles lie in the closed right-half plane. Answer: (C) 2.

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Critical point. The closed-loop poles are the roots of , that is . So we count how many times the plot of encircles . This is the same as counting encirclements of by the plot of . The real-axis crossings of are and , and these lie on either side of .

  2. Nyquist criterion with a clockwise contour. . Here is the number of closed-loop poles inside the contour, is the number of open-loop poles of inside it, and is the net number of clockwise encirclements of the critical point.

  3. Open-loop poles. The question says has no poles in the closed right-half plane, so and the contour needs no indentations.

  4. Nothing on the imaginary axis. The plot meets the real axis only at , , and the right-hand crossing of the large curve. It never passes through , so for every . There are no closed-loop poles on the -axis, and is the full count for the closed right-half plane.

  5. Large outer curve. Its leftmost point is at and it goes around the origin, so it encloses . The arrows show it runs clockwise: the top arc moves right and the lower-right arc moves down and to the left. Contribution: clockwise.

  6. Left lobe of the figure-eight. It runs from to along the real axis, so is inside it. Its upper arc moves right and its lower arc moves left, so it runs clockwise. Contribution: clockwise.

  7. Right lobe. It runs from to , so it does not contain . It contributes whichever way it is traversed. (It runs counter-clockwise.)

  8. Check with a ray. Draw a vertical ray upward from . It crosses exactly two branches: the upper arc of the left lobe and the upper-left part of the large curve. Both move left to right where they cross, so above the point that is two clockwise crossings. The right lobe never reaches .

  9. Result. The closed-loop system has 2 poles in the closed right-half plane, so it is unstable. Answer: (C).

KEY IDEA

When the plot shown is of but the loop gain is , shift the critical point rather than rescaling the plot. Count clockwise encirclements of (here ). Then take the direction of every loop from its own arrows and apply for a clockwise contour. Only loops that actually contain the critical point contribute to .

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting encirclements of instead of . Nothing in the figure encloses , so this gives and the wrong answer (A). A second error is treating the figure-eight as one loop, or letting its two lobes cancel. The counter-clockwise right lobe does not contain , so it cancels nothing, and the clockwise left lobe adds one encirclement to the outer circle's one.
