Answer and solution

ANSWER

The Nyquist plot encircles the origin 2 times, both clockwise.

  1. Argument principle about the origin: as goes clockwise around the Nyquist contour (up the axis from to , then around the infinite semicircle enclosing the right half-plane), the plot of circles the origin times clockwise. Here counts the right-half-plane zeros of itself (not of ), and counts its right-half-plane poles. No pole lies on the axis, so the contour needs no indentation.

  2. Zeros are at , both in the RHP, so . Poles are at , both in the LHP, so . That gives clockwise encirclements.

  3. Check with the magnitude. Because and , so the plot lies on a circle of radius centred at the origin. It is an all-pass function.

  4. Check with the phase. For , the vector lies in the second quadrant, so its angle is ; similarly for . Hence

  5. As goes from to , the phase falls steadily from to , starting and ending at the point . That is one full clockwise turn around the origin.

  6. The branch for from to is the complex conjugate (mirror image in the real axis) of the branch, traversed in the opposite order of . Reflection and reversal together keep the sense of rotation, so it adds a second clockwise turn. The infinite semicircle maps to the single point and adds nothing. Total: 2 encirclements (clockwise), which agrees with .

KEY IDEA

When a question asks about encircling the origin, not the point , apply the argument principle to itself. Then uses the open-loop right-half-plane zeros and poles. Here the two RHP zeros at give clockwise. The all-pass magnitude of and the total phase swing confirm it directly.

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering 1 by tracing only the to half of the plot, which is one circle. The mirror half from to adds a second turn. Other traps: counting zeros of (the closed-loop rule for the point) in place of the zeros of , and deciding there is no encirclement because the magnitude is constant.
