Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Single-loop negative feedback block diagram. A summing junction (circle) feeds forward via an arrow into block G(s); the output of G(s) is a line running off to the right. From the right, a line with an arrow pointing left enters block H(s) in the feedback path (below G(s)); the output of H(s) runs left and then up into the bottom of the summing junction, where it is marked with a minus sign. No reference-input arrow or signal labels are drawn.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The infinite semicircular arc maps to the single point . Option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. The infinite arc of the Nyquist contour: the large semicircle is with and running from to (clockwise). Its image is .

  2. Compare the degrees: the numerator and the denominator are both degree 1, so is proper but not strictly proper. The limit is therefore a finite, nonzero constant, which rules out and .

  3. Divide the numerator and denominator by :

  4. Both and go to zero as whatever the value of , so every point on the arc tends to the same value. The whole infinite arc collapses to the single point , the ratio of the leading coefficients.

  5. Why not : is . That is the image of the point on the axis, not of the arc at infinity.

KEY IDEA

On the Nyquist contour, the arc at infinity maps to . If the numerator and denominator have the same degree, that limit is the ratio of their leading coefficients, so the whole arc shrinks to one finite point on the real axis. If the function is strictly proper, the point is the origin. Here the ratio is .

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual mistake is to pick out of the habit that "the infinite arc maps to the origin". That is only true for strictly proper functions, and this one has equal degrees. The other trap is , which comes from putting into the function. That gives the start of the -axis image, not the image of the arc at infinity.
