Figure description

A 4-to-1 multiplexer drawn as a box labelled with data inputs 0, 1, 2, 3 on its left side. Inputs grouped under the vertical label INPUT: A_0 goes to input 0, A_1 to input 1, A_2 to input 2, A_3 to input 3. The select lines are labelled SELECT with S_1 and S_0 at the bottom of the box; C drives S_1 and D drives S_0 (arrows coming up from below). A single arrow on the right side of the box is labelled OUTPUT.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, which is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EC (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. How a 4-to-1 MUX works: the output copies the data input whose index is the binary number on the select lines, . Here (the MSB) and (the LSB), so .

  2. Write out the output: (an overline means complement).

  3. The function we want: , which is 1 only for minterms () and ().

  4. Match the two expressions minterm by minterm: each data input appears only in minterm , so it must equal the function's value there: .

  5. input 0 is selected, and , so .

  6. input 1 is selected, and , so .

  7. input 2 is selected, and , so .

  8. input 3 is selected, and , so .

  9. So , which is option (C). Check: substituting into step 2 gives .

KEY IDEA

When the function's variables drive a MUX's select lines, the data inputs are simply the function's truth-table column: , with indexed by . For XOR that column is . XOR is symmetric in C and D, so the answer does not change even if you read as the MSB, because swapping the select lines only swaps and , and both are 1.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (A) (0, 0, 1, 1), which is just (the MSB select line), or (B) (1, 0, 1, 0), which is . This happens when the truth table is written against one variable instead of against the combined index . Picking (D) means confusing XOR with its complement or with .
