Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A box labelled [S] in the centre (the original two-port). On its left, a two-wire transmission line section of characteristic impedance Z_0 is attached to port 1. Its outer (far-left) terminals are marked z_1 = l_1 and the terminals where it meets the [S] box are marked z_1 = 0 (dashed vertical reference line). A double-headed arrow above this left section is labelled theta_1 = beta l_1. On the right, a second two-wire line section of characteristic impedance Z_0 is attached to port 2. The terminals at the box are marked z_2 = 0 (dashed vertical reference line) and the outer (far-right) terminals are marked z_2 = l_2. A double-headed arrow above it is labelled theta_2 = beta l_2. A dotted rectangle encloses both line sections and the [S] box, and is labelled [S'] beneath it: the new two-port whose reference planes are at z_1 = l_1 and z_2 = l_2.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A):

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Let and be the incident and reflected wave amplitudes at the new reference planes and , and the ones at the original planes . The added lines have the same characteristic impedance as the reference impedance, so they add no reflection, only phase.

  2. Phase delay on a matched lossless line: a wave that travels a length picks up the factor . The incident wave travels from the new plane in to the old one, and the reflected wave travels from the old plane out to the new one:

    Equivalently, and .

  3. Input reflection (set , which gives ): the original network gives . Then

The reflected signal crosses line 1 twice: in and back out.

  4. Forward transmission (again , so ): . Then

The signal crosses line 1 once and line 2 once.

  5. By the same argument with (so ), driving from port 2: and .

  6. In matrix form:

The magnitudes are unchanged; only phase lag is added. This is option (A).

KEY IDEA

Moving the reference planes outward along matched lossless lines of electrical lengths and keeps every the same and multiplies each entry by the phase lag of the path its signal travels: . A reflection crosses its own line twice, giving . A transmission crosses each line once, giving .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using on the reflection terms (options B and C). A positive exponent is de-embedding: it moves the reference plane in towards the network, which removes line length. Adding line only ever adds phase lag. A second mistake is to give the transmission terms a different sign from the reflection terms (option D). Every entry picks up delay, because every signal path gets longer.
