Answer and solution

ANSWER

The largest input impedance magnitude is .

Official answer: 200Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. On a lossless line the reflection coefficient at distance from the load is . Its magnitude stays at . Only its phase changes, falling by , so over any stretch of the phase passes through every angle from to .

  2. The input impedance at distance is

  3. With fixed, the triangle inequality gives and . Both bounds are reached at the same point, where . Step 1 guarantees the line has such a point: it is a voltage maximum, and is purely real there.

  4. So the largest impedance magnitude is times the VSWR:

  5. Numerically, , so .

  6. Check: at a voltage minimum () the value is . Along the line, moves between and and repeats every . The phase of the unknown load only decides where these points fall, not how large they are.

KEY IDEA

On a lossless line, stays the same everywhere and only its phase rotates. So is largest where is real and positive, which is a voltage maximum. There , which is real. You do not need the load's phase: it only moves the maximum along the line.

WATCH OUT FOR

The usual slips are these. Some students give , which is the minimum, not the maximum. Some stop at VSWR and forget to multiply by . Some decide the problem cannot be solved because the load is unknown, but the load's phase only shifts where the maximum occurs, never its value.
