Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A two-wire lossless transmission line drawn horizontally (two thick parallel lines). At the right end (z = 0) the two conductors are joined by a vertical wire, i.e. a short-circuit load. A z-axis runs left to right beneath the line, with the right end marked 0 and the left end marked -l. Vertical dashed lines divide the line into four equal segments, each labelled λ/8 with double-headed arrows along the top. Moving from the load (z = 0) towards the generator (left): the first dashed line (distance λ/8 from the load) is labelled z_inA, the second (distance λ/4) is labelled z_inB, the third (distance 3λ/8) is labelled z_inC, and the fourth, at the left end z = -l (distance λ/2), is labelled z_inD. Each label has a right-pointing bent arrow indicating the impedance looking towards the load.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A): , , , .

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. For a lossless line of length ending in a load , the input impedance is For a short circuit, , so this becomes . The normalized impedance is therefore where is the distance from the load (at ) back towards the generator.

  2. Point A, : , so (inductive).

  3. Point B, : , and , so . A quarter-wave line turns the short into an open circuit.

  4. Point C, : , so (capacitive).

  5. Point D, : , so . A half-wave line repeats its load, so the input is a short circuit again.

  6. The sequence matches option (A). The paper prints after the values, but a normalized impedance has no units, so read those entries as and . On a Smith chart: start at the short-circuit point () and move clockwise (towards the generator) around the outer circle. Each rotates by , so the points go short, , open, , short.

KEY IDEA

Looking into a short-circuited lossless line from a distance , the normalized impedance is . It is purely reactive and repeats every . At it is , at it is an open circuit, at it is , and at it is a short again.

WATCH OUT FOR

There are three common slips. The first is measuring from the generator end (point D), which reverses the sequence and leads to option (C). The second is using as if it were the Smith-chart rotation angle (), which puts the open circuit at instead of . The third is mixing up the sign: a short-circuited stub shorter than is inductive (), not capacitive.
