GATE 2022 · EEQ.40 · 2 marks · MCQ

denotes the exponential of a square matrix A. Suppose is an eigenvalue and is the corresponding eigen-vector of matrix A.

Consider the following two statements:

Statement 1: is an eigenvalue of .

Statement 2: is an eigen-vector of .

Which one of the following options is correct?

  1. (A)

Statement 1 is true and statement 2 is false.

  2. (B)

Statement 1 is false and statement 2 is true.

  3. (C)

    Both the statements are correct.

  4. (D)

    Both the statements are false.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Both statements are true: , so is an eigenvector of with eigenvalue . Answer (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Start from the eigenvalue relation: with .

  2. Apply repeatedly (induction): , and in general for every (with ).

  3. Use the power-series definition of the matrix exponential, which converges for every square matrix:

  4. Multiply the series by term by term (allowed because the series converges and multiplying by a fixed vector is linear):

  5. Since and , the same vector is an eigenvector of (Statement 2 true), and the eigenvalue it belongs to is (Statement 1 true).

  6. This is a special case of the general rule: for any polynomial or convergent power series , has eigenvalue with the same eigenvector . Both statements are true, so the answer is (C).

KEY IDEA

From you get for every . Put that into the series and it gives . More generally, keeps the eigenvectors of and maps each eigenvalue to .

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking the function changes the eigenvectors along with the eigenvalues, and so picking (A). Applying a polynomial or power series to changes only the eigenvalue (). The eigenvector stays the same. A second slip is to treat as the entry-wise exponential of . It is the matrix power series, not taken entry by entry.
