Answer and solution

ANSWER

and , so .

Official answer: -8Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 IN (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Rank one means the row space is one-dimensional, so every row is a scalar multiple of any one nonzero row. (Equivalently, every minor is zero.) Row 1, , is nonzero, so rows 2 and 3 must both be multiples of it.

  2. Row 2: its first entry is , so row 2 row 1. The second entries must agree too: . (The minor check says the same: .)

  3. Row 3: its second entry is , so row 3 row 1. The first entries must agree too: . (Minor check: .)

  4. Check the remaining minor with these values: . So the rank really is (it cannot be , since has nonzero entries).

  5. The value is already an integer, so rounding changes nothing: the answer is .

KEY IDEA

A rank-one matrix has every row proportional to one nonzero row. That is the same as saying every minor vanishes. Each unknown sits in a row with one known entry, and that known entry fixes the scale factor for its row.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the wrong entry to fix a row's multiplier, for example taking row 3 as row 1 instead of row 1, which gives and a ratio of . Another slip is computing and rounding it to . Also, setting only one minor to zero is not enough: you have to use both the row-2 and row-3 conditions.
