Answer and solution

ANSWER

3 July falls on a Sunday. The answer is (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Only the days of June and the first days of July lie between the two dates. June always has 30 days, and February (the only month a leap year changes) comes before 2 June, so it does not matter whether the year is a leap year.

  2. Count the days from 2 June to 3 July: from 2 June to 30 June is days, and from 30 June to 3 July is more days, so the gap is days.

  3. The day of the week repeats every 7 days, so only the remainder matters: , which leaves extra days.

  4. Move 3 days forward from Thursday: Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday.

  5. Check: 30 June is days after 2 June, so it is also a Thursday. Then 1 July is a Friday, 2 July a Saturday and 3 July a Sunday. The answer is (D) Sunday.

KEY IDEA

Count the days between the two dates and divide by 7. Only the remainder shifts the weekday: here 31 days is 4 full weeks plus 3 days, so Thursday moves forward 3 days to Sunday.

WATCH OUT FOR

Off-by-one counting. Some students count 2 June as day 1 and get 32 days (remainder 4, Monday, which is not even an option). Others take June as 31 days and get 32 days again. The gap is 3 July minus 2 June: 28 days to the end of June plus 3 days of July, which is 31.
