GATE 2023 · BTQ.56 · 2 marks · NAT

If 1000 bp of a double-helical DNA weighs and distance between two bp is , the total amount of DNA (in mg, rounded off to one decimal place) required to stretch from Earth to Moon (assuming the distance between Earth and Moon to be 3,74,000 km) is ______.

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The total DNA required to stretch from Earth to Moon is 1.1 mg.

Official answer: 1.0 to 1.2Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 BT (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Convert the Earth–Moon distance into nanometres, the same unit as the base-pair rise: (using ).

  2. The distance between two base pairs, , is the rise per base pair along the double helix. So the number of base pairs needed to span a given length is .

  3. Number of bp (since ).

  4. Convert the given mass per 1000 bp to mass per single bp: .

  5. Total mass .

  6. Convert grams to milligrams (): .

  7. Rounded to one decimal place, the total amount of DNA required is .

KEY IDEA

Convert the Earth–Moon distance to nanometres, divide by the 0.34 nm rise per base pair to get the total number of base pairs needed, then multiply by the mass per base pair (derived from the given 1×10⁻¹⁸ g per 1000 bp) to get the total mass, converting grams to milligrams at the end.

WATCH OUT FOR

Forgetting to convert km to nm before dividing by the 0.34 nm rise (mixing units gives a wildly wrong bp count), or dividing by 1000 bp instead of multiplying back up when converting mass-per-1000-bp to mass-per-bp, or missing the final g-to-mg conversion (leaving the answer as 0.0011 instead of 1.1).
