Answer and solution

ANSWER

The hard-margin SVM gives , , with 3 support vectors and margin . Options (B) and (C) are correct.

Official answer: B, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 DA (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Label Class-1 as and Class-2 as . The hard-margin SVM is: minimise subject to for all four points.

  2. The four constraints are: gives , so . gives . gives . gives .

  3. Since , the second constraint gives , and the third gives . Hence for every feasible we have .

  4. The bound is attained at , . Check all constraints: : ; : ; : ; : . So this is the optimum, and it is unique because the minimum of over occurs only at .

  5. Support vectors are the points whose constraint is tight, . These are , and ; the point has value , so it is not one. The number of support vectors is 3, so (B) is correct.

  6. Margin width . Check: the line is at distance from each of the two supporting lines and , so the gap is . So (C) is correct.

  7. (A) is false: with , the point gives , so it is not even feasible (and it is not the optimum). (D) is false: the data are linearly separable, so the hard-margin SVM classifies all 4 points correctly, giving training accuracy , not (with 4 points, accuracy can only be 0, 25, 50, 75 or 100 percent).

KEY IDEA

Write the four margin constraints. The point forces , which forces , so the smallest norm is at with . Support vectors are the points whose constraint holds with equality, and the margin width is .

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting as a support vector because it is in Class-1, or taking the margin as instead of the full width . Another slip is trusting option (A) without checking feasibility at .
