Figure from the GATE 2024 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A multi-branch circuit with a common bottom (ground) rail and a top rail split into two nodes, A (left) and B (right). Left of node A: an independent 5 mA current source between ground and A, arrow pointing up (current pushed into A). Next, a 1 kΩ resistor from A down to ground, carrying current I_0 marked flowing downward. Node A connects to node B along the top rail through a dependent (diamond) voltage source of value 1000 I_0, with its − terminal on the left (node A) and + terminal on the right (node B), so V_B - V_A = 1000 I_0. From node B to ground there are two branches: (i) a 1 kΩ resistor in series with a 2 mA independent current source whose arrow points down (towards ground); (ii) a 1 kΩ resistor carrying current I_x marked flowing downward to ground.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

Official answer: 2Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EC (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Take the bottom rail as ground. Call the left top node A and the right top node B. Ohm's law on the left 1 kΩ gives , so with in volts, in mA.

  2. The dependent source is a CCVS: its coefficient 1000 has units of ohms, so is a voltage. Here . With − at A and + at B: .

  3. Ohm's law on the right 1 kΩ: (in mA, with in volts).

  4. The middle branch is a 1 kΩ resistor in series with a 2 mA source, so it carries exactly downward. A resistor in series with a current source does not change the branch current.

  5. Apply KCL to the supernode that encloses A, B and the dependent source. Current in equals current out:

  6. Solve: , so and .

  7. Hence . Check: , which equals the source current.

KEY IDEA

A floating dependent voltage source between two non-reference nodes calls for a supernode. Write KCL once around both nodes and use the source to link the node voltages (). A current source in series with a resistor fixes that branch current at 2 mA, whatever the resistor.

WATCH OUT FOR

(1) Reversing the dependent source's polarity, i.e. writing . That gives and . (2) Putting into in mA instead of amperes, which inflates the source voltage by a factor of 1000. (3) Thinking the 1 kΩ in series with the 2 mA source changes that branch's current, or trying to write a KVL equation across a current source.
