GATE 2024 IN question 43: Inverting op-amp low-pass (integrator-type) filter.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2024 IN paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Inverting op-amp low-pass (integrator-type) filter. The source V_in (bottom terminal grounded) connects through resistor R to the inverting (−) input of the op-amp. The feedback network between the inverting input and the output node is a resistor R_f in parallel with a capacitor C (C drawn above R_f). The non-inverting (+) input is grounded. The op-amp is powered by V_CC (top) and -V_EE (bottom). The output node is labelled V_out.

  1. (A)

    159.1 Hz

  2. (B)

  4. (D)

    175.0 Hz

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(A) 159.1 Hz. The dc gain of fixes , so . The options print this value cut off after one decimal place.

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 IN (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Assumption: ideal op-amp. The non-inverting input is grounded, so the virtual short holds the inverting input at , and no current flows into the op-amp's input terminals.

  2. Feedback impedance. The feedback network is in parallel with :

  3. Transfer function. For an inverting amplifier, , so This is a first-order low-pass filter.

  4. DC gain fixes . At the capacitor is an open circuit, so the gain is . That gives .

  5. 3 dB frequency. The gain magnitude falls to of its dc value when , so . The pole is set by and only. The input resistor changes the gain, not the cut-off.

  6. Matching the options. Strict rounding of to one decimal place gives , but no option prints that. Option (A), , is the same value cut off after one decimal place. All four options were produced the same way. (B) is , which uses the wrong resistor (exact value ). (C) is with . (D) is one-tenth of (C) (exact value ). Only (A) comes from the correct expression , so the answer is (A).

KEY IDEA

In an inverting amplifier with in the feedback path, the gain is . The dc gain sets , and the single pole sits at . The input resistor sets the gain but plays no part in the cut-off.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the input resistor in the cut-off formula. gives (option B), and gives (option C). A second trap: strict rounding of gives , which is not printed. Candidates who look only for can wrongly reject (A), the only option that comes from .
