GATE 2023 EC question 39: Three op-amps, each powered from V_CC (top rail) and -V_EE (bottom rail).Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Three op-amps, each powered from V_CC (top rail) and -V_EE (bottom rail). Op-amp 1 (top left): V_IN is applied through R_1 to its inverting (−) input; R_2 is connected from its output back to the − input; its non-inverting (+) input is grounded. Op-amp 2 (bottom left): the V_IN node is also wired straight down to its non-inverting (+) input; its inverting (−) input goes to ground through R_1, and R_2 is connected from its output to the − input. Op-amp 3 (right): the output of op-amp 1 goes through a resistor R_3, and the output of op-amp 2 goes through a second resistor R_3. Both resistors join at the inverting (−) input of op-amp 3. R_4 is connected from the output of op-amp 3 back to its − input, and its + input is grounded. The output of op-amp 3 is V_OUT.

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EC (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Assume ideal op-amps (infinite input resistance, zero output resistance, infinite open-loop gain) that stay in their linear region, well inside the and rails. Each stage has negative feedback from its output to its inverting input, so each has a virtual short across its inputs and draws no input current.

  2. Top op-amp (inverting amplifier): its + input is grounded, so its − input is at . KCL at the − node (current in through equals current out through ): , which gives

  3. Bottom op-amp (non-inverting amplifier): is wired straight to its + input, so its − input is also at . KCL at the − node: , which gives

  4. Right op-amp (inverting summer): both resistors meet at its − input. That input is a virtual ground because the + input is grounded. KCL at the − node: , so

  5. Add the two first-stage outputs. The terms cancel:

  6. So which is option (A). The result does not depend on or .

KEY IDEA

With the same and , the inverting gain and the non-inverting gain always add to exactly 1. An equal-weight summer that adds the two outputs therefore sees just , and the whole circuit reduces to the summer's inverting gain .

WATCH OUT FOR

One mistake is to read the bottom op-amp as a second inverting stage because it also has an and an . In fact drives its + input, so it is non-inverting, and goes to ground. Misread this way, the two outputs add to and does not cancel. Another mistake is to forget that the output stage is an inverting summer (its + input is grounded) and choose (B) . Treating it as a non-inverting stage gives (C).
