Answer and solution

ANSWER

. Only this value makes , and it also makes in the current-free region.

Official answer: 2Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 EE (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Every magnetic field obeys Gauss's law for magnetism, . In free space , where is a constant, so as well.

  2. Read off the components: , , .

  3. Divergence in spherical coordinates: The last term is zero because .

  4. Radial term: , so .

  5. Polar term: , and , so the term is .

  6. The sum must vanish at every and :

  7. Check: the field region is free space with no current, so should also be there. Only the component can be non-zero: This is zero only for as well. Both conditions agree, and the field is the familiar magnetic-dipole far field, .

  8. Answer: .

KEY IDEA

A proposed field is a physically valid magnetic field only if its divergence is zero (, so in a linear homogeneous medium). Setting the divergence to zero fixes the unknown constant. In a current-free region gives an independent check. The result, over , is the magnetic-dipole field.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the Cartesian-style divergence and leaving out the and factors. That gives , which cannot vanish for every and , or leads to a wrong value such as or . Another slip is dropping the inside the -derivative: differentiating alone gives and so , when the correct derivative of gives the factor of 2.
