For a lossless passive two-port network, and intersect at dB.

For a lossy passive two-port network, and intersect at dB.

The percentage of power dissipated in the lossy network at the intersection frequency is ____. (rounded off to two decimal places)

See the question in the paper

Answer and solution

ANSWER

About 20.38% of the incident power is dissipated in the lossy network at the intersection frequency.

Official answer: 20.00 to 21.00Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Send unit power into port 1 with port 2 terminated in a matched load. Then is the fraction of power reflected and is the fraction transmitted. Whatever is neither reflected nor transmitted is dissipated inside the network:

  2. Check this against the lossless case. A lossless network has a unitary S-matrix, so . Where the two curves cross, , so each squared magnitude is , and . That agrees with the first statement in the question.

  3. In the lossy network the curves cross at dB, so . Since ,

  4. Reflected plus transmitted power: .

  5. Dissipated power:

KEY IDEA

S-parameter magnitudes squared are power fractions. In a passive two-port driven at port 1 with port 2 matched, reflected power is and transmitted power is . Any shortfall from 1 is power lost inside the network. At a crossing point both curves have the same dB value, so both power fractions are .

WATCH OUT FOR

A common slip is converting dB with . That is the magnitude , not the power fraction. Adding the two magnitudes, or subtracting magnitudes from 1, gives a meaningless result. Another slip is to count only one of the two terms and write . The reflected and transmitted powers must both be subtracted.
