GATE 2026 · ECQ.52 · 2 marks · MCQ

A complex load (in ) is represented as on the Smith chart.

A co-axial cable with a characteristic impedance of is connected to the load.

The new input impedance of the load now moves to a diametrically opposite point on the same circle on the Smith chart.

Which option is the nearest input impedance of the cable connected load (in )?

  1. (A)

  2. (B)

  3. (C)

  4. (D)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

(B) . The input reflection coefficient is , which gives and so .

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Diametrically opposite point. On a constant- circle, the diametrically opposite point has the same magnitude and a phase away. So . One full turn of the Smith chart is of line, so a half turn means the lossless cable is long.

  2. Rectangular form. .

  3. Normalised input impedance from :

  4. De-normalise with : .

  5. Cross-check with the quarter-wave rule . The load is , so . Then which agrees. (Equivalently, turns into : .)

  6. The nearest option is (B), .

KEY IDEA

A diametrically opposite point on the same circle means . That is a turn of the chart, which is a lossless line, so the normalised impedance inverts: , or .

WATCH OUT FOR

Option (D), , is the load impedance itself. You get it by converting and forgetting to move to the opposite point. Option (C) is its conjugate, which you get by reflecting the point across the real axis (flipping the sign of the phase) instead of turning it through . A further slip is adding and then taking and with the wrong signs. Both parts of are negative.
