Consider the system of linear equations: , where is an matrix, and and are -dimensional column vectors.

Suppose this system of equations has a unique solution. Which of the following statements is/are correct?

  1. (A)

    exists

  2. (B)

The system of equations also has a unique solution for

  3. (C)

    , for

  4. (D)

, where denotes the augmented matrix.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The correct options are (A), (B) and (C). A unique solution means is non-singular, and so is every power of it, since . Option (D) is the condition for having no solution.

Official answer: A, B, CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 EE (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Rouché–Capelli theorem. A system with unknowns has a unique solution exactly when . Here is , so it has full rank , which means .

  2. (A) is true. A square matrix with is non-singular, so exists. The solution is .

  3. (B) is true. The determinant is multiplicative, so . That makes invertible too, and has exactly one solution, , for every Uniqueness comes from being invertible, so it holds whatever is.

  4. (C) is true. is an invertible matrix, so it has full rank. Therefore for every .

  5. (D) is false. is the condition for an inconsistent system, meaning one with no solution. This system has a solution, so .

  6. The correct options are (A), (B) and (C).

KEY IDEA

For a square system, a unique solution exists exactly when is non-singular: , which is the same as . Every power of is then non-singular too, because . So keeps full rank , and also has exactly one solution.

WATCH OUT FOR

Picking (D) because "rank" and "augmented matrix" sound like the uniqueness test. actually means the system is inconsistent, with no solution at all. A second trap is rejecting (C) on the idea that powers of a matrix can lose rank. That only happens when is singular (a nilpotent matrix, for example), and a unique solution rules that out.
