GATE 2020 EC question 16: A single series loop.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2020 EC paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A single series loop. On the left branch is an independent sinusoidal voltage source labelled 200 cos (5t) V, with its + terminal at the top and - terminal at the bottom. From the source's top terminal a wire runs up and along the top branch through a resistor R (value not given) to the top-right corner; the current i(t) is marked on the top branch with an arrow pointing to the right, i.e. clockwise around the loop, leaving the source's + terminal. The right branch holds an inductor L running from the top-right corner down to the bottom-right corner. The bottom wire returns to the source's - terminal.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The inductance is .

Official answer: 2.80 to 2.85Source: Official answer key, GATE 2020 EC (IIT Delhi)

  1. Write the source and the current as phasors at (rms values, amplitude ): and , because .

  2. and are in series with the source, and leaves the source's + terminal. So the source voltage equals times the total impedance: (Peak phasors give the same ratio, .) The current lags the voltage by , as it should with an inductive load.

  3. Convert to rectangular form and match it to the series RL impedance :

  4. Equate the imaginary parts: . The real parts also give , but is not needed.

  5. Solve for the inductance:

KEY IDEA

In a series RL circuit fed by one sinusoid, gives both the magnitude and the angle of . The phase lag of the current, , fixes , so . You never need the value of .

WATCH OUT FOR

Three common slips. (1) Using as if it were , which gives . (2) Forgetting to divide by and answering . (3) Treating the lag as degrees, or using for the reactive part instead of . At exactly the last slip happens to give the right number, but it breaks at any other angle.
