Figure description

A single empty rectangular block. An arrow labelled x(t) enters the block from the left; an arrow labelled y(t) leaves it on the right. There are no other blocks, gains or feedback paths.

  1. (A)

    linear and causal.

  2. (B)

    linear and non-causal.

  3. (C)

    non-linear and causal.

  4. (D)

    non-linear and non-causal.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The system is linear and non-causal, so the answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2022 EE (IIT Kharagpur)

  1. Linearity (superposition test): apply . The system reads the input at the instant , so . Additivity and homogeneity both hold. Only the time axis is warped; the amplitude is not touched. So the system is linear.

  2. Causality test: a system is causal if depends only on for . Here depends on the input at the single instant .

  3. Compare with for every real . For : . For : every term of is non-negative, so . So always, and the output at every instant needs an input value from a later time.

  4. Check at one instant: , so the output at needs the input at . Likewise . One counter-example is enough to prove the system is non-causal.

  5. Conclusion: the system is linear and non-causal, which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

A system that only changes the time argument, , is always linear, because the amplitude of passes through unchanged. It is causal only if for every . Here for every real , so the output always depends on a future input value.

WATCH OUT FOR

Mixing up with . The second one really is non-linear, and that confusion leads to option (C) or (D). A second trap is checking causality only for large , or assuming negative maps to the past. It does not: , which is still later than .
