Figure from the GATE 2025 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Two ideal op-amps in cascade (a two-op-amp instrumentation/difference amplifier). Op-amp 1 (left): its inverting (−) input connects to the junction of two 10 kΩ resistors in series along the top; the left 10 kΩ goes from that junction to ground, the right 10 kΩ goes from that junction to the output of op-amp 1 (feedback). The non-inverting (+) input of op-amp 1 goes down to an open terminal marked '−' of the input voltage V_in. Op-amp 2 (right): the output of op-amp 1 connects through a 10 kΩ resistor to the junction at the inverting (−) input of op-amp 2, and a second 10 kΩ resistor goes from that junction to the output of op-amp 2 (feedback). The output of op-amp 2 is V_out. The non-inverting (+) input of op-amp 2 goes down to an open terminal marked '+' of V_in. V_in is drawn as a double-headed arrow between the '−' terminal (op-amp 1 + input) and the '+' terminal (op-amp 2 + input). All four resistors are 10 kΩ.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The voltage gain of the circuit is 2.

  1. Assume ideal op-amps: infinite open-loop gain and zero input current. Both op-amps have negative feedback, so each has a virtual short between its two inputs. Call the voltage at the input terminal marked '−' and the voltage at the terminal marked '+' , so that .

  2. Op-amp 1 is a non-inverting amplifier. is on its + input, so its − input also sits at . The two 10 kΩ resistors form a divider from its output to ground, with the − input at the midpoint. So

  3. Op-amp 2: by the virtual short, its − input sits at . No current flows into the op-amp, so KCL at that node gives

  4. Solving for the output: .

  5. Substitute :

  6. Voltage gain .

KEY IDEA

This is the two-op-amp instrumentation amplifier. The first stage scales by . The second stage outputs . When (here all resistors are equal), the common-mode part cancels and .

WATCH OUT FOR

Treating the second stage as a plain inverting amplifier, , and forgetting that its + input carries . That gives a gain of −2 or 1 instead of 2. A second mistake is taking op-amp 1's gain as 1 (a follower) when its − input actually sits at the midpoint of a 10 kΩ/10 kΩ divider.
