An opamp that is powered from a supply is used to build a non-inverting amplifier having a gain of 15. The slew rate of the opamp is . For a sinusoidal input with amplitude of , the maximum frequency (in kHz) up to which it can be operated without any distortion is (up to one decimal place) ____.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The maximum distortion-free frequency is .

Official answer: 17.5 to 17.9Source: Official answer key, GATE 2018 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Assume the op-amp is ideal except for its slew-rate limit. The non-inverting amplifier has a closed-loop gain of 15, so .

  2. Output peak: . This is inside the supply, so the output does not clip. The only thing that limits the frequency is the slew rate.

  3. For , we get . Its largest magnitude occurs at the zero crossings: .

  4. For no slew-rate distortion we need . This gives , the full-power bandwidth for this output amplitude.

KEY IDEA

The slew rate limits the output of the op-amp, not its input. First find the output peak, , and check that it stays inside the supply rails so clipping is ruled out. Then set the sinusoid's largest slope, , equal to the slew rate: .

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the input amplitude of 0.3 V in place of the output peak of 4.5 V gives about 265 kHz, which is 15 times too high. A second mistake is to use the supply voltage of 5 V as , which gives about 15.9 kHz. The supply only tells you whether the output clips. The slew-rate limit depends on the actual output swing.
